So, serious question: who cares? And why?

I do because I’m an English teacher and I too get frustrated when pedants walk all over the natural and evolving usage of English. From the website of the Plain English Campaign there is as much of an admission.

‘The supermarket giant is to replace its current “10 items or less” notices with signs saying “Up to 10 items”.

Tesco’s move follows uncertainty over whether the current notices should use “fewer” instead of “less”.’

If the English can’t be sure about their own language then it’s in a sorry state isn’t it. A quick check of a copy of Practical English Usage by Michael Swan (OUP, 2005) confirms that “less” is used with uncountable nouns, but is also commonly used with countable nouns in an informal style.

It’s arguably not incorrect, which is of course a double negative. The change was recommended by a group campaigning against gobbledygook, jargon and misleading public information.

What I think they’ve missed is that irrespective of it’s correctness, almost everybody understands what it means. Does “up to” always mean “and including” I wonder?

I hopped on the bus yesterday morning and slapped my wallet up against the go card reader causing it to flash red, warning me my card had already been read. The bus driver grumbled, “you shouldn’t do that, it’s just read every card you have in there”.

As I got to my seat I felt a little unsettled at his comment, until I realised that my go card uses rfid technology, none of the other cards in my wallet do. What the driver thought was a public service announcement was actually closer to a public nuisance bordering on threat. What does he care? Does the bus company have a vested interest in the other things in my wallet?

The risk associated with using an rfid system for transport fares is greater for the transport company, not the passenger. If someone decides to use my go card to travel two zones, I’d soon find out about it and just cancel the card.

In fact the benefits for using a go card far outweigh the risks as a consumer, for so many reasons. For one, I don’t carry cash, so I’m less likely to use it or spend it. Second, I get a 20% discount on the price of every trip. Thirdly, I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve jumped on and the machines haven’t been working, therefore granting me a free ride. Just like Ricky, I’m probably ahead by about the value I normally store on my card. So, even if I lost it (which I won’t because it’s stuck firmly in my wallet) I’d wouldn’t lose out.

I guess I value openness and convenience over some misguided notion of privacy.
