Finding awareness through movement, I'm committed to changing education for the better. My old blog Rainbowhill Language Lab is still a great place for learning about Japanese language and culture, it's just a little quiet these days.
I was at a children’s birthday party today where there was the customary magician and puppet show. In one part of the show the magician pulled out a something that looked like a microphone attached to box with a dial and told the audience “this is my happiness meter.” She then proceeded to ask the children in the audience where on the body would be the best place to detect happiness.
The first child said “all over my body”, to which she replied “but where on your body does happiness come from?” The second child said “here in my heart”, to which she said “but aren’t you happiest when you are thinking happy thoughts?” and then proceed to measure the response from peoples heads.
At that point I thought, no, the children had it right. Happiness starts in your heart, and pervades the entire body before it comes anywhere near your thoughts.
Perhaps the magician’s view is symptomatic of what happens as we become adults, we over emphasise the head and thinking, while forgetting that true happiness dwells in the heart.
