Fixies?

I follow a few bikers on here and seems to me like they are in love with “fixies”. I guess these are bikes without multiple speeds, am I right? So, I’m curious, what exactly is the appeal of these? I don’t mean that in a snarky way or anything—I’m honesty curious.
See, I enjoy biking. I’d hardly consider myself an enthusiast and actually probably know little about it beyond my own...
